Topic P5 - Forces - Weight, Mass And Gravity Flashcards
What two things does gravity do?
- On the surface of a planet, it makes all things fall towards the ground
- It gives everything a weight
What is mass?
Mass is the amount of ‘stuff’ in an object. For any object it will have the same value anywhere in the universe.
What is weight?
Weight is the force acting on an object due to gravity. This force is caused by the gravitational field around the earth.
What is gravitational field strength?
It varies between location and it is stronger the closer you are to the mass causing the field, and stronger for larger masses.
What is weight measured in?
Weight is a force measured in Newtons and with a newton meter.
What is mass measured in?
Mass is not a force and is measured in kilograms.
How to calculate weight…
You can calculate weight of an object if you know its mass (m) and the strength of the gravitational field that is in (g)
Weight equation is…
Weight (N) = Mass (kg) x Gravitational Field Strength (N/kg)
