Topic P3 - Particle Model Of Matter Flashcards
What is density?
Density is a measure of the ‘compactness’ of a substance.
What is the units of density?
The units of density are kg/m cubed. (The mass is in kg and the volume is in m cubed)
What does the density of an object depend on?
It depends on what it is made of and how the particles are arranged
What is internal energy?
Internal energy is the energy stored by the particles that make up a system
Where is energy in a particle
The energy is in their kinetic energy stores
What is the internal energy of a system?
The internal energy of a system is the total energy that its particles have in their kinetic and potential energy stores
What does heating the system do?
By heating the system it transfers energy to its particles (they gain energy in their particle stores and move faster), increasing the internal energy
What is specific latent heat?
Specific latent heat is the energy needed to change the state of a 1kg mass
What is the specific latent heat of a substance?
Specific latent heat of a substance is the amount of energy needed to change the state of a 1kg mass
