Q

What is respiration?

A

this is a universal process in which energy is released from food molecules. Normally respiration requires oxygen and CO2 is the waste product.

Q

What does lactic acid do?

A

lactic acid is toxic and it accumulates in muscles. As it accumulates the muscle aches and develops a cramp

Q

What is photosynthesis?

A

This is a vital bological process which all living organisms - animals and plants rely on. green plants can take in simple inorganic molecules such as carbon dioxide, water + nitrates to make complex energy - rich molecules such as carbohydrates.

Q

The process of photosynthesis?

A

In photosynthesis plants take in CO2 + H20, using energy in the sunlight in which the chlorophyll traps in the chloroplasts. Using the energy in this sunlight these molecules are combined to make sugars. the bi-product of photosynthesis is oxygen.

Q

experiment for photosynthesis?

A

Put a cutting in a beaker of water and count the bubbles that come out of the cutting in a set time. You can measure the following variables. Light intensity, light color, temperature, carbon dioxide, surface area of leaf, and water. Only one of these can be a variable at a time.

16
Q

Why do plants need light?

A

Plants need light to perform photosynthesis.

17
Q

Why do plants need a constant good temperature?

A

The reactions in the enzymes can only happen at certain temperatures.

18
Q

Adaptations of the leaf for photosynthesis?

A
Thin
Large Surface area
Air spaces
Stomata on underside
Many chloroplasts is the palisade cells
palisade cells
19
Q

How has the structure of the leaf adapted for gas exchange?

A
  • The flat thin shape gives it a high surface area which optimizes gas exchange.
  • The internal structure of the leaf includes the spongy mesophyll that contains many air spaces which also increases the opportunity for gas exchange
20
Q

What is the roll of stomata in leaves?

A

The stomata regulates the level of water and CO2 that can leave or enter the leaf. When the stomata is open ( the Guard Cells are turgid) the amount of water loss is increased and the amount of Carbon Dioxide that enters is increased. The opposite happens when the stomata is closed (Guard Cells become flaccid). This regulates water movement and loss in the plant and also effects the rate of photosynthesis.

21
Q

What else do plants require for growth?

A

mineral ions

22
Q

What ions are needed for chlorophyll?

A

magnesium ions

23
Q

What ions are needed for amino acids?

A

nitrate ions.

24
Q

Which type of respiration produces more energy?

A

More energy is released during aerobic respiration.
