Topic D: Third movements Flashcards
1
Q
Stamitz op 3 no 2
A
- First and second violins play the same throughout.
- The B section of the rounded binary minuet starts with a new idea before the A brings back the opening material: unusual as other composers treated this as a development section.
2
Q
Haydn 47
A
- Both the minuet and trio has a palindromic structure: the B section is the A section played backwards.
- Trio palindrome is much more subtle.
3
Q
Haydn 94
A
- Tempo marking suggests it is faster than the traditional minuet.
- More aggressive writing and increased speed point towards faster scherzo movements.
4
Q
Beethoven 3
A
-Fast and aggressive Scherzo: very long way from the traditional minuet.
5
Q
Berlioz Symphonie Fantastique
A
The second movement of this symphony is the equivalent of the minuet/scherzo.
- This movement represents a waltz idea with two harps dominating the texture at the start.
- The waltz is combined with the idee fixe idea from the first movement.
6
Q
Tchaikovsky 5
A
- The minuet idea is replaced with a waltz.
- Orchestra textures are also much more varied
7
Q
Tchaikovsky 6
A
-Begins like a scherzo but develops into a march like idea, which ends in triumph.
8
Q
Mahler 2
A
- sinister 3/8 back in the C minor of the first movement.
- Relentless rhythms and distorted melodies lead to a tutti fff chord with thundering timpani and precussion.
- Ends with a whimper and fizzles out with the brass.
