Topic B4 - Respiration And Metabolism Flashcards
Where does energy come from?
Energy comes from food and is transferred by respiration
What is respiration?
Respiration is the process of transferring energy from glucose, which goes on in every cell
What else respirates?
Plants respirate too and so do all living things. It is how they transfer energy from their food to their cells.
Is respiration exothermic or endothermic?
Exothermic it transfers energy to the environment
What are the three examples of how organisms use the energy transferred by respiration?
1) to build up larger molecules from smaller ones
2) in animals it is used to allow the muscles to contract (so they can move about)
3) in mammals and birds the energy is used to keep their body temperature steady in colder surroundings.
What is metabolism?
Metabolism is all the chemical reactions in an organism
