What is meant by nature vs nurture?
Nature is what you genetically inherit from parents and nurture is external factors from environment
What is maturation?
Maturation is a genetically programmed sequence of change
What is Gesell’s maturation theory say?
He noted that children moved through a sequence at their own pace. That development is predetermined and that environment has little influence
What was Bandura’s study?
He did a study on the social learning theory. That we observe others behaviours and we imitate it.
What us the stress-diathesis model?
This model explains how stress is caused by life events and can interact with an individuals genetic vulnerability.
What does it mean by genetic predisposition?
The possibility that you will develop a certain condition. Means you inherit it from parents
What does it mean by susceptibility to disease?
Diseases that involve environmental factors and the complex interaction of many genes
What does it mean by biological factors that affect development?
The environment inside a mothers womb can have an influence on a development
What is cystic fibrosis?
Cystic fibrosis is caused by a faulty gene. A result of this is that it produces defective protein that causes the lungs to be clogged with thick mucus. It causes problems with absorbing nourishments and might suffer from chest infection
What is brittle bone disease?
This can be passed down from parents or a genetic mutation. Children with this are at high risk of fracturing or breaking bones easily because their bones develop without the right amount or type of protein called collagen
What is Phenylketonuria?
It is rare genetic disorder that prevents a child from breaking down phenylalanine an amino acid found in food like meat, milk and eggs. If they eat one pf these their body will build up with harmful substances.
What is Huntington’s disease?
Huntington’s diseases is an inherited genetic disorder that causes damage to nerve cells in the brain. It can affect muscle coordination, mental decline and behavioural changes.
What is Klinefelter syndrome?
This is not an inherited condition, an extra chromosome is acquired after the baby is born. Baby’s born with this may have undescended testicles. Poor muscle power, delayed communication and a passive personality can be signs.
What is Down’s Syndrome?
This is a genetic condition that causes an extra chromosome. This causes learning disabilities and medical issues.
What is colour blindness?
It is a rare condition when an individual cannot see any colour. It is a genetic condition.
