What is nurture?
The influences that an environment has on an individual including social and environmental factors.
What is nature?
Physical characteristics which are biologically determined by genetic inheritance
What are milestones?
Milestones are used today to measure development and identify developmental delay.
What is a dominant gene?
If a gene is dominant, a child can inherit it from just one parent who has the condition. An example of this is Huntington’s disease.
What is a recessive gene?
If the gene is recessive, a child needs to inherit from both parents to develop the condition. Examples of this are cystic fibrosis and sickle cell anaemia.
Cystic fibrosis
Recessive. causes thick mucus to be produced which effects the lung and digestive system.
Brittle bone disease
Dominant. Brittle bone disease affects the development of growth of bones.
PKU
Recessive. Leads to a build up of amino acid which is toxic to the nervous system can lead to irreversible brain damage.
Huntingtons disease
Dominant. Can affect movement and cognition
Environmental factors
Issues external to the body. Pollution, housing, geographical location, access to health care.
What is a respiratory disorder?
Conditions affecting the upper respiratory tract, trachea, bronchi, alveoli, pleura and pleural cavity.
What is cardiovascular problems?
any disorder or disease of the heart or blood vessels
Allergies?
caused by irritants such as dust or pollen causing immune system to overact.
Poor housing conditions
poor health and quality of life. increases the risk of respiratory and cardiovascular disease, as well as anxiety and depression.
Why do people have a religion?
-A sense of belonging
-Gives people guidance and a purpose
-An explanation
Jehovah’s witnesses
Believes that the bible prohibits ingesting blood and that Christians should not accept blood transfusions or donate or store their own blood for transfusion.
What is a family?
A family is a social group of people, often related genetically, by marriage or by living together as a group
What are the 4 types of families?
-Nuclear
-Single parent
-Extended
-Blended
What is a dysfunctional family?
A family that is not providing all of the support and benefits associated with being in a family
What factors could cause a dysfunctional family?
-stress
-poor parenting skills
-controlling, aggressive and manipulative family members
-neglecting children
-inconsistent parental teaching
Why might there be sibling rivalry?
-jealousy
-gain a sense of control
-gain power in a household
-feeling helpless and powerless
-parents encouraging competition
-parents deliberately promoting conflict
What are the 4 styles of parenting?
-Authoritative
-Authoritarian
-permissive
-uninvolved
What is Authoritative parenting?
Parents that are not overly strict.
What is Authoritarian parenting?
Parents have a high expectation, often overwhelming their children with strict unexplained rules and regulations.
