Topic 9.1 - Energy Resources Flashcards
What are renewable energy sources?
Energy sources that can be replenished on a very short timescale
Also known as flow resources
What are non-renewable energy resources?
Energy resources that can’t be replenished quickly so can run out
Also known as stock resources
What are recyclable energy sources?
Energy sources made up from waste products or whose waste products can be used to generate more energy
What are some sources of renewable, recyclable, non-renewable energy resources?
Renewable - wind, solar, hydroelectric power
Non-renewable - fossil fuels
Recyclable - nuclear energy, biomass
How does nuclear energy work?
Uranium atoms are used. When they split they produce lots of heat which is used to boil water. The steam turns a turbine generating electricity
How does biomass energy work?
Biomass can be burnt to release energy or used to produce biofuels. Sometimes it is already available as a waste product from other processes.
