Topic 9: Population Subdivision and Gene Flow (pt. 1) Flashcards
metapopulation
a large population composed of two or more partially (or completely) isolated demes, such that mating within metapopulation is not random
subpopulation or deme
groups of individuals that mate randomly with each other in the absence of inbreeding and assortative mating
Wahlund Effect
perception of a heterozygote deficit caused by treating two different subpopulations as a single population
how does population subdivision affect F in the metapopulation?
population subdivision increases F in metapopulation (think earthworm example)
when is F(ST) = 0? when is F(ST) = 1?
F(ST) = 0 when all subpopulations have identical allele frequencies
F(ST) = 1 when all subpopulations are fixed for different alleles
