Topic 3: Gametic Disequilibrium/Linkage Disequilibrium Flashcards
mendel’s laws (2)
first law: random segregation
- alleles at a single locus segregate randomly, offspring have a 50% chance of inheriting each of a parent’s alleles (basis of HW)
second law: independent segregation/assortment
- alleles at diff loci segregate independently, so that inheritance of alleles at locus A is independent of alleles at locus B
mendel’s second law: independent segregation/assortment:
when is this true? when is this not true?
true when loci are located on diff chromosomes, but if they are located close together on same chromosome, they will not always segregate independently, and can be inherited as a single “unit”
these loci are said to be LINKED, will result in linkage disequil or gametic disequil
another name for gametic disequil?
nonrandom genotype associations
can you have perfect HW equil with gametic disequil?
Yeah!
ex. 25 AABB, 50 AaBb, 25 aabb
perfect gametic equil would have:
ex. AABB, AaBb, aabb, AABb, AaBB, aaBb, aaBB, AAbb, Aabb
def of gametic disequil?
nonrandom genotype (and hence allelic) associations among loci (aka linkage disequil)
other than linkage disequil, what does gametic disequil include?
selection, genetic drift, migration
meiosis meaning
four haploid gametes produced from a diploid parent cell (located in gonads)
recombination meaning?
process by which sister chromosomes can exchange pieces of DNA during meiosis by crossing over
what breaks down gametic disequil?
recombination!
AB + ab = AaBb (coupling phase double het)
Ab + aB = AaBb (repulsion phase double het)
when r = 0.5, can there still be gametic disequil?
There cannot be linkage disequil, but there CAN be gametic disequil (e.g., drift, selection, migration)
when we consider gametic disequilibrium, do we use multilocus genotype freq or gamete freq?
gamete freq bc it’s easier
what are the 2 ways that gametes can unite to form a double heterozygote?
AB + ab = AaBb (coupling)
Ab + aB = AaBb (repulsion)
only recombination in individuals that are ______ at both loci will change gamete frequencies over time (and approach 0 for gametic disequil)
heterozygous
recombination in coupling phase double heterozygotes creates?
Ab and aB repulsion phase gametes
How are gametic disequil and sexual reproduction connected? (their relationship) (3)
- matings between diff individuals result in new combinations of genes in offspring
- recombination and crossing over in meiosis during gametogenesis creates genetic diversity
- recombination and crossing over in meiosis breaks down gametic disequil, which will also increase genetic diversity
these factors increases genetic diverse offspring, allow purging of deleterious mutations
