You can see small pictures of other people in their profile along with a list of the people they are friends. You can send alerts out to all your friends about what you’re up to. For example, if you decide to go to university everyone can be notified easily. Facebook is a great way of getting in touch with people you have lost touch with.

Many bands and artists have chosen to have their own pages on the site along with the pages of millions of other ordinary people. MySpace has provided a way for artists to reach their audience. The site allows direct communication between famous artists and their fans. As well as musicians other celebrities have their own MySpace pages. When you sign up for MySpace you have to design a profile page by adding a picture, making a quote and giving some information about your favourite music. You can also add information about your hobbies, the films and books you like, who you would like to meet, and choose your top friends.
The site has a range of services such as email, bulletins, blogs, friend comments, photographs, tapes, videos and music. Many people put personal details up on this website and although some settings allow anyone to view them you can set your profile to private so you can select who sees them.

If you have an Internet connection then you can communicate easily with people all around the country or even the world. Many people who use computers for their work areable to do their work at home. Working from home using ICT equipment and telecommunications is called tele working or online working. There are many light, portable devices such as PDAs, tablet computers, laptops and netbooks. These mean that you can work on the move and from any location, as they can use a wireless connection to access the Internet.

Artificial intelligence is the science of getting computers to learn in a similar way the human brain learns new things. The aim of this is to make computers more intelligent and make them able to work things out for themselves. Artificial intelligence is a reasoning process performed by computers that allows the computer to draw deductions, produce new information and modify rules or write new rules. The computer, just like a human, is able to learn as it stores more and more data.

Computer-assisted translation is a type of translation from one language to another where the person doing the translation uses computer software to help them with the translation. They usually include spellcheckers, grammar checkers, and databases of terminology. Some advanced computer-assisted translation programs will take the text in one language and turn into the wordprocessed text in a different language automatically or with minimal human involvement.

Quantum cryptology uses a special branch of physics to produce a very secure method of encryption. It allows the sender and receiver to communicate in private using a special key. If someone is trying to eavesdrop on the communication, the system is able to detect this and the system stops the communication. This method is used by the military to send orders to troops and also for sending financial and banking details over networks.

Vision enhancement uses special sensors (which are usually special cameras) that detects information from images that are outside the visible spectrum. This information is then put together with the ordinary image to make it clearer. Virtual reality is a simulation of the real world, or an imaginary world that is created using computers. Sometimes the images are displayed on a computer screen and sometimes it is displayed on a specially designed headset that you wear. In some cases users are able to interact with the virtual environment using a keyboard and mouse or by using a specially wired glove.
