Topic 9 - Altruism Flashcards
What is green beard altruism?
It is one proposed mechanism predicted to underpin the evolution of altruistic behaviour. It relies on the recognition and the selective help of altruists to each other in order to promote and sustain altruistic behaviour.
Why can altruism not work?
If the costs are too high, the relatedness is too low.
What is altruism?
It’s a selfless, costly behaviour aimed at helping others.
What is competitive altruism?
It’s being competitive in a group setting (cooperative problem-solving study) with altruistic behaviour. The basis for this is that altruists are like better/better rewarded.
Is there evidence of competitive altruism?
- cooperative problem-solving study
- children > 8 yo when being observed
What is zahavian signalling?
It’s signalling of genetic quality, that can be costly and can be fuelled by partner choice.
What is an altruism chain?
A chain of altruistic behaviour that needs an “extreme” altruist at the start.
What are the differences between altruists and psychopaths?
Differences in recognition of fear, amygdala’s reactivity/size.
What is a study that investigated enhancing altruism?
Mikulincer and Shaver’s (2011) with subliminal attachment messages.
