What is the CCPC?
The CCPC was set up in 2014. It has two functions:
• To protect consumers by enforcing consumer legislation (The Consumer Protection Act 2007 and The Sale of Goods and Supply of Services Act 1980).
• To make sure competition laws are obeyed, so Irish businesses and consumers are satisfied.
What services do the CCPC offer?
- The CCPC operates a consumer helpline and website that offer information and advice to consumers.
- The CCPC advises the government on new consumer legislation.
- It investigates complaints about unsafe products.
What is the consumer association of Ireland?
This is a non-profit organisation that was set up in 1966, working on behalf of Irish consumers. Its functions include:
• Protecting the rights of Irish consumers
• Giving advice support and information to consumers.
• To represent the views and interests of Irish consumers.
What is the advertising standards authority of Ireland?
The ASAI was set up by the advertising industry to protect consumers by making sure that all advertisements for goods and services are legal, decent and honest.
What does the central bank of Ireland?
The Central Bank of Ireland supports and protects consumers by monitoring and controlling the activities of firms that lend money, insurance companies and credit unions.
What does the Ombudsman do?
The Ombudsman investigates complaints from individuals that feel they have been treated unfairly by certain organisations that deliver public services including:
• All government departments
• The Health Service Executive (HSE) e.g. public hospitals.
• Local authorities e.g. county councils
• Nursing homes
The Ombudsman will provide a free and impartial service. You must try and sort out your complaint with the organisation before contacting the Ombudsman.
What is the small claims procedure?
The Small Claims Procedure allows consumers to have their complaint dealt with for a fee of €25, by the local District Court, if they are unable to resolve it themselves. The claim must not exceed/be bigger than €2,000. It is a quick, easy (online) method of resolving complaints.
