Topic 8: Arousal Regulation Flashcards
Arousal Regulation
Athletes must identify their optimal level of arousal in practice and competition settings. They have to learn how to effectively regular physiological, mental and emotional states to achieve these optimal levels.
Approaches to Regular Arousal: Breathing Exercises
Deep vs shallow breathing increases oxygen to the body and facilitate elimination of CO2.
Approaches to Regulate Arousal: Progressive Relaxation
Tension and relaxation are mutually exclusive. Tense a muscle - then relax. Move progressively through muscle groups/body part.
Approaches to Regulate Arousal: Performance Routines
Develop sequenced actions and thoughts before performance.
Approaches to Regulate Arousal: Attentional Cues
Triggers that direct attention (Word repeated at appropriate moment, clapping, etc.)
Approaches to Regulate Arousal: Self-Talk
Verbalization or internal statements addressed to the self that serves for instruction and motivation. It has interpretive elements associated with the content of the self-statements.
Approaches to Regulate Arousal: Imagery
Incorporates ‘seeing’ an image, feeling the movements, and experiencing smells, tastes, sounds, moods and emotions.
