What is networked computing?
It’s connected to other computers, able to communicate with others.
Hardware like printers can be shared, which saves money.
Files can be worked on and software can be accessed from any computer
What is a stand alone computer?
It’s a computer which is not connected to any other computers.
The machines aren’t networked, therefore there is less chance of a virus
Less expensive option no equipment is needed to maintain the network.
What are the two types of networks?
LAN (local area network) spread over small geographical area such as school site.
WAN (wide area networks) spread over much larger geographical area. Such as all the cash points in the UK. Also the Internet is an example
What are the main developments and benefits of using the Internet?
It is easier for communications. Set up business meeting through video conferencing. Also communicate to friends.
Easier to share data and ideas with others.
Faster to access information.
How would a organisation choose to share information?
INTRANET- A private network- opens only to within an organisation.
-A hospital may have an intranet to communicate info to its doctors.
EXTRANET- A semi-private network. Open to employees plus selected third part. Could be used to share info with medicine suppliers
What are the features of emails?
Voice mailboxes
Address boxes
Group sending
File attachments
What are the benefits, disadvantages and dangers of emailing?
Ben- important files be attached and sent with the message. Better for environment
Dis- junk emails and not everyone has access to Internet.
Dangers- phishing emails can trick into bank details being given away. Viruses
