topic 8 Flashcards
the alveoli from the person with emphysema have a what surface area than a healthy lung?
smaller
the suface area of the alveoli will affect how much oxygen moves into the blood by the process of what?
diffusion
explain how the structure of a blood vessel realted to its function?
the blood vessel has thick walls. They carry oxygenated blood to carry blood under higher pressure.
what does the right ventricle do?
pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs
one reason why the left ventricle is thicker than the right?
to pump blood around the body at a higher pressure
descibe what would happen to the flow blood in the left side of the heart if the bicuspid valve did not function effectively?
blood would flow backwards from the ventricle to the utruim. This means less blood would be pumped to the body.
where does gas exchange take place in the lungs?
alveolus
explain how emphysema would affect the amount of oxygen carried in the bloodstream?
it reduces the amount of oxygen carried to the bloodstream because there is reduced alveoli which are the gas exchange surface between the lungs and blood capillaries.
give one reason why it is important that human lungs have a high surface area to volume ratio?
to maximise gas exchange.
equation for aerobic respiration?
glucose + oxygen -] carbon dioxide + water
