describe the stages of the menstrual cycle
- Menstruation: The shedding of the uterine lining, resulting in menstrual bleeding.
- Follicular phase: Follicles in the ovaries begin to mature, with one follicle developing into a mature egg. Estrogen levels rise, thickening the uterine lining.
- Ovulation: The mature egg is released from the ovary, ready for fertilization.
- Luteal phase: The empty follicle becomes the corpus luteum, which secretes progesterone to maintain the uterine lining. If fertilization doesn’t occur, hormone levels drop, leading to menstruation and the start of a new cycle.
