Topic 7 - Sleep and circadain rhythms Flashcards
What are electroencephalograms?
They measure the synchronous, electrical activity from large populations of neurons in the brain.
- Muscle movements with electromyography
- Eye movements with electro-oculography
- Brain activity with electroencephalography
why do electroencephalograms have high temporal resolution but low spatial resolution?
have high temporal resolution as it is non-invasive, easy to administer and data is easily gathered.
BUT low spatial resolution as electric fields follow an inverse square law so only cortical activity detectable.
What are the 4 main stages of REM sleep?
- Stage 1 – drowsiness – awakened easily.
- Stage 2 – light sleep
- Stage 3 – Deep Sleep
- VERY DEEP SLEEP
- Stage 5 – REM SLEEP
What is the normal sleeping pattern in humans and how much is REM sleep in young adults?
NORMAL SLEEPING PATTERN (Humans) – REM and non-REM sleep alternate cyclically.
Rem sleep is only 20-25% in young adults.
