Topic 7 Physics Flashcards
What is a quark?
elementary particle
What are the two main types of quarks?
Hadrons - quarks w/ weak nuclear bond & consist of mesons and baryons
Leptons - quarks w/ strong nuclear bond
What are baryons?
heavy subatomic particles that are made up of 3 quarks
What does the baryon neutron consist of?
ddu
What does the baryon proton consist of?
uud
What are mesons?
subatomic particles that are made up of a quark and an anti-quark
What are leptons?
subatomic particles that are not affected by strong nuclear forces but are affected by weak forces
What are the four fundamental forces from strongest to weakest?
Strong nuclear force, electromagnetic force, Weak nuclear force, gravitational force
What are the Feynman Diagrams?
Feynman diagrams are used to express the behavior of subatomic particles over time
Draw the Feynman diagram when a photon is being absorbed by an electron
check book
Draw the Feynman diagram when a positron absorbs a photon
check book
Draw the Feynman diagram when an electron emits a photon
check book
Draw the Feynman diagram when a photon materializes from an electron positron-pair
check book
Draw the Feynman diagram when an electron and positron collide producing a photon
check book
Draw the Feynman diagram when an electron and positron collide producing a photon. The photon then materializes into a new particle and anti-particle
check book
Draw the Feynman diagram when a d quark changes into a u quark
emits a w- boson
Draw the Feynman diagram when an electron changes into an electron neutrino
emits a w- boson
Draw the Feynman diagram when a muon changes into a muon neutrino
emits a w- boson
Draw the Feynman diagram when an electron stays an electron but emits a certain boson
emits Z^o boson
What is alpha decay?
Radioactive decay that emits an alpha particle (4 2 Helium )
What is negative beta decay?
Radioactive decay that emits an electron and a neutrino
What is positive beta decay?
Radioactive decay that emits a positron and a neutrino
What is a gamma emission?
Radioactive decay of atomic nuclei that emits a photon. The electrons in the element on the reactants side go down energy levels.
