Topic 7:excretion in humans Flashcards
what is the definition of excretion?
excretion is the removal of metabolic waste products and toxic substances in excess of the body’s requirements
what is the chem equation for the formation of waste products for aerobic respiration?
C6H12O6+6O2->6CO2+6H20
give one example of nitrogenous waste and how it is formed .Also, state which human body parts is it excreted from and what is it excreted in
Nitrogenous wastes such as urea are from deamination of excess amino acids .
It is excreted from kidneys, a component in urine
It is also excreted from skin, small quantities in urine
what molecules are filtered out of the blood into the filtrate collected in the Bowman’s capsule
-Amino acids,glucose
-Mineral ions
-water
-Nitrogenous wastes
what substances are absorbed in PCT and state what type of absorbtion it is .(do also state the amount of each substance absorbed and what type of absorption it is eg.diffusion)
At the PCT,it is selective reabsorption
-ALL glucose, amino acids by diffusion+active transport
-Most mineral ions by diffusion+active transport
-most of the water by osmosis
state what substances are absorbed in Loop of Henle(descending)and specify how it is absorbed
Reabsorption of water
what substances are absorbed in Loop of Henle(ascending)and specify how it is absorbed
reabsorption of Na+ by active transport
what substances are absorbed in DCT and specify how it is absorbed
-mineral ions by active transport
-some water by osmosis
(fill in the blanks)Urine in collecting duct only contains(1)______________and excess(2)___________
(1)nitrogenous wastes
(2)water
what is the definition of Osmoregulation
the control of water and solute concentrations in the blood in order to maintain a constant water potential in the blood
what are the 4 functions of kidneys?
1.Regulate water
2.Remove waste products
3.Balance minerals
4.Produce hormones
what are all the common causes of kidney failure
high blood pressure, diabetes, alcohol abuse, accidents that damage kidneys, complications from surgery
what are the substances that do not get filtered out
proteins,blood cells and platelets
do be familiar with all 4 features of Kidney Dialysis Machine
