What is a natural satellite

A

Things like the moon not man made and they orbit planets with almost circular orbits

Q

What are asteroids and comets

A

Asteroids-lumps of rock and metal that are usually found in the asteroid belt and orbit sun
Comets-lumps of ice and dust and orbits are highly elliptical (very curved circle)

6
Q

What is g

A

G means gravitational field strength
Other bodies in space (such as the moon)may have different gravitational field strengths so objects will vary in weight

Q

What does current model suggest

Q

What does the steady state theory say

A

Universe always existed
Universe expands and new matter is always being created
No beginning or end to universe

Q

What does the Big Bang theory say

A

Universe started with an explosion that was very dense and hot
Space is expanding

Q

What is red shift

A

Theory that galaxies are moving further away from earth and further galaxies are moving faster than nearer ones

15
Q

Explain how red shift works

A

-Different elements absorb different frequencies of visible light shown by black lines
-Lower frequencies means something is further away
The black line readings have been moving to lower frequencies over time so means galaxies are moving away from earth

16
Q

What is Cosmic Micro Background Radiation

A

Low frequencies of microwave radiation in space from the initial explosion that started the universe

17
Q

What models does red shift support

A

Red shift solid ports both the Big Bang and steady state theory
Both models suggest objects are moving away from earth

18
Q

What models does the CMB support

A

CMB radiation only supports Big Bang theory as it shows the universe had a beginning unlike the steady state theory

19
Q

CMB and red shift both support Big Bang theory so that is why it is the currently accepted theory

20
Q

What happens to the sound waves of a moving object (frequency)

A

The sound waves decrease in frequency(lower pitch) further away and have higher frequency(higher pitch) closer up

21
Q

Stars initially form from a cloud of dust and gas called what?

22
Q

Gravity pulls gas and dust together inwards to from ______

23
Q

What process happens in the protostar

A

Nuclear fusion
Gives out lots of energy which creates star

24
Q

What 2 forces balance out in the main sequence star(lasts for billions of years)

A

Thermal expansion outwards
Gravity inwards

25
After the main sequence star what can the star turn into
Red giant Red supergiant
26
What stage happens next after the red giant
Turns into a white dwarf
27
After a red supergiant explodes what does it turn into
A supernova
28
After the supernova throws outer layers of dust and gas into space it leaves a neutron star If big enough it will become a black hole not even light can escape
29
Which shows the order of largest to smallest correctly A.galaxy-solar system-planet-sun B.galaxy-solar system-sun-planet C.planet-galaxy-solar system-sun D.planet-solar system-sun-galaxy

Deimos is a moon that orbits the planet mars The circumference of its orbit is 23500km and it’s time period is 48 hours Calculate the orbital speed of Deimos in km/day
48hours =2 days 23500/2= 11750km/day

32
What force causes planets to orbit the sun
Gravity

What do comets orbit
Stars
