Topic 4 Waves(completed) Flashcards
Waves transfer ____and____ without transferring___
Information
Energy
Matter
What is frequency
The number of waves that pass a point a second
What is wavelength
The distance between the same point on 2 different waves
What is amplitude
The height of a wave
The time it takes for a complete wave to pass
Wavefronts are the same points on 2 waves
Wave speed is how far a wave travels in a second
What is the 2 equations involving wave speed
Wave speed= distance/time
Wave speed=frequency multiply wavelength
What is used to measure frequency
Herts
Hz
What are longitudinal and transverse waves
Transverse-direction of travel perpendicular to direction of vibration(waves)
Longitudinal-direction of travel in parallel to direction of vibration
All waves on electromagnetic spectrum are ______
Transverse
What type of waves are sound waves
Longitudinal
Cannot travel in space because of vacuum
What piece of equipment is used to measure speed of sound in air
An oscilloscope
How do you measure ripples on water surface using a strobe light
Place paper(screen)under tank of water
Use dipper that dips in and out of water to create waves
You will see wave pattern made by shadows of wave crests that are the wavelengths
When a wave reflects off a surface what happens
The wave bounces back off of it
When a wave is absorbed by a material what happens
The wave can’t travel through or bounce back and doesn’t go anywhere
What is refraction
When a wave changes direction and speed when passing through a different medium
If a wave passes through a new material what is this called
Transmissio
Wavelengths in more dense materials isn longer
Explain how refraction works
When a wave passes into a new medium that is more dense it’s ssleed will slow down and it will bend slightly towards the normal
Different substances may absorb ,transmit, refract or reflect waves in different ways that vary with the wavelength of a wave
1What are sounds with frequencies less than20 Hz called
2What are sounds with frequencies more than20,000Hz called
1 Infrasound
2 Ultrasound
What are 2 uses of ultrasound
Sonar detecting
Foetal scanning in babies
What is the process in the human ears for how they hear things(6 things)
Ear canal-ear drum -tiny bones-cochlea-hairs-auditory nerves
Explain how each does it’s job
Ear canal
Ear drum
(3)Tiny bones
Cochlea
Hairs
Auditory nerves
Ear canal-directs and funnels sound waves to ear drum
Ear drum -vibrates when sound hits it
(3)Tiny bones-vibrate and pass onto the cochlea
Cochlea-contains fluid that controls balance and detects frequencies of sound
Hairs-create electrical impulses
Auditory nerves-send electrical impulses to the brain
Hairs-
