Topic 7 Flashcards
Compare the Big Bang theories and steady state model
Steady space model has no beginning to space time whereas bing bang has a definite start to space time just under 14 billion years ago.
Big Bang suggest universe becomes less dense over expansion throughout time whereas steady model says density will stay the same
Both agree that universe is expanding
Which model is the current accepted model and why
The Big Bang theory as there is more evidence to support it than the steady state model
Describe evidence for the Big Bang theory using red shift
Red-shift provides evidence for the Big Bang theory as it shows that all objects in the universe are moving away from one another.
This suggests that the objects began from a single point, the point at which the Big Bang occurred.
Red shift shows that the universe is expanding
Describe CMB radiation as evidence for Big Bang
It is considered to be the remnants of the Big Bang explosion.
What happens if a wave source is moving relative to an observer
There will be a change in the observed frequency and wavelength
Describe red shift from galaxies at different distances away from earth and how it shows evidence the universe is expanding
Light from distant galaxies in space is red-shifted.
The further a galaxy is from Earth, the greater the red-shift.
This means that the further away a galaxy is, the faster it is moving away from us. Therefore shows evidence that the universe is expanding
How do big bang and steady state both account for red shift of galaxies
Big Bang - red shift shows all objects in the universe are moving away from each other
The Steady State model also accounts for red-shift because it states that new matter is being created to account for the expanding Universe.
