Topic 6 - Plant Structures And Their Functions Flashcards
What is biomass?
Biomass is the materials in an organism
What’s the equation for photosynthesis?
Carbon dioxide -> glucose
+ water + oxygen
Where does photosynthesis occur?
In chloroplasts which contain a green substance called chlorophyll that traps energy from light
What are glucose molecules linked up to form?
A polymer called starch
Sucrose is transported around the plant and may be used to make…
- starch
- other molecules for the plant ( such as cellulose, lipids or proteins)
- glucose for respiration
Why is photosynthesis slower at the top of a mountain?
Because the reactions in photosynthesis are catalysed by enzymes that work better at warmer temperatures
What are some limiting factors of photosynthesis?
- carbon dioxide concentration
- temperature
- light intensity
What do root hair cells do?
They have a large surface area so that Water and mineral ions can be quickly absorbed
What do root hair cells consist of?
- a vacuole
- mitochondria
- nucleus
And other stuff
What do xylem cells do?
Xylem cells carry the water and minerals from the roots up to the leaves of the plant. It also provides structure and support for the plant
What do phloem cells do?
Phloem cells are specialized to transport products of photosynthesis around the plant
What is transpiration?
Transpiration is the evaporation of water from plants. (Through the xylem vessel)
What environmental factors can effect the rate of transpiration?
- light
- temperature
- humidity
What is the stomata?
The stomata ate small holes situated on the underside of the leaf which allow gases to diffuse in and out.
What is the role of the guard cells?
The guard cells control the opening and closing of the stomata
