  • Practical problems:
    o keeping up an act risk cover being blown
    o cannot write down notes
    o cannot ask naive important questions
    o addition of member to group can have hawthorne effect
  • Ethical problems:
    o immoral to deceive people to obtain information
    o participate in immoral / illegal acts
    o witness activities which must be reported to police

    o easier to gain access than interviews
  • Theoretical:
    o valid data

  • Practical problems:
    o time consuming
    o training, observational and interpersonal skills
    o personal characteristics restrict what groups can be studied e.g age, gender, ethnicity
    o difficult to access
  • Ethical problems
  • Theoretical problems:
    o not representative, reliable
    o ‘going native’ = over-involved = biased
    o loyalty to group or fear of harm may conceal information
    o may be biased in favour of ‘underdog’
    o structuralist theorists argue it ignores wider structural values
