Topic 6 Groups In The Periodic Table Flashcards
What are the group 1 elements called?
The alkaline metals
What are the physical properties of alkali metals?
Good conductors of heat and electricity
Shiny when freshly cut
What is produced when an alkaline metal reacts with water?
Alkaline metal hydroxide and hydrogen
What happens to the reactivity of alkaline metals as you go down the group?
Increases
Lithium fizzes steadily
Sodium melts into a ball potassium gives off sparks and hydrogen is produced
What is the density of alkaline metals?
Less dense then water so they float
What are the elements in group 7 called?
The halogens
How do the melting and boiling points change as you go down the group?
Melting and boiling points increase
What happens as you go down the group 7 elements?
The intermolecular forces between molecules become stronger
More heat energy is needed to overcome these forces
What happens when elements in group 7 are reacted?
In reactions with metals halogens gain electrons and are reduced
The outer shell gets further away from the nucleus
The force of attraction becomes weaker
What is the appearance of fluorine,chlorine,bromine and iodine at room temperature?
Fluorine=gas and goes pale yellow
Chlorine=gas and goes yellow-green
Bromine=liquid and goes red-brown
Iodine=solid and goes dark grey
How can you demonstrate a displacement reaction with a halogen?
Add a halogen solution to a metal halide solution, then see if the mixture darkens
What are group 0 elements called?
The noble gases
What are the chemical properties of noble gases?
Full outer shell electrons
Chemically inert
Don’t lose, gain and share electrons
Uses of noble gases?
Helium is less dense than air so its used in balloons and airships
Non-flammable
Argon is filling gas used in filament lamps
It’s un reactive and inert so it doesn’t burn away
