Topic 6 - Covalent Bonding Flashcards
1.28 - How are covalent bonds formed?
Formed when a pair of electrons is shared between two non-metal atoms, making a strong bond held by strong electrostatic forces of attraction forming a covalent bond.
1.29 - What do covalent bonds usually form?
Covalent bonds form molecules which have weak inter-molecular forces between them.
1.30 - What are the typical sizes of atoms and small molecules?
10^ -10 m
1.31 - How are simple molecules and covalent substances formed?
When the valency of the two elements are the same, this means they have the same amount of electrons to form bonds with to make a complete outer shell.
e.g Hydrogen and Chlorine both needing one electron to complete their outer shell so share a pair of electron.
