Topic 5 - Ionic Bonding Flashcards
1.21 - How are ionic bonds formed?
By a transfer of electrons between a non-metal and a metal atom making two charged ions, a cation and anion.
Ionic bonds are held together by the strong electrostatic force of attraction between the charged ions.
1.22 - What is an ion?
An atom with a positive or negative charge.
1.23 - What are atomic and mass numbers?
Atomic number is the number of protons.
Mass number is the number of protons and neutrons ( nucleons ).
1.24 - How does the formation of ions differ in groups 1,2,6 and 7?
Group 1 - Loses 1 electron so 1+ charge
Group 2 - Loses 2 electron so 2+ charge
Group 6 - Gains 2 electron so 2- charge
Group 7 - Gains 1 electron so 1- charge
1.25 - What are the meanings of the endings -ide and -ate in compounds?
-ide are non-metal ions
-ate and -ite ions are polyatomic and contain oxygen
1.26 - How to find ionic compounds formulae given ion formulae?
Use swap and drop, Na+ and CO3 2- form Na2CO3
1.27 - What is the structure of an ionic lattice?
Has a regular arrangement of ions so form crystals.
Held together by strong electrostatic forces between oppositely charged ions result in lots of ions being packed in regular arrangement forming a lattice structure.
