Topic 5 - Religion In Society Flashcards
Social factor of your choice (1).
Consumerism - excessive desire for material consumption.
People who are more consumerist, tend to have lower satisfaction with their lives and lower ethical standards.
Psychologist perspective - more hostile and abusive.
Pope XIII taught - material prosperity can be the result of Christian mortality.
Wealth is a consumers goal and purpose - that’s why they have a lack of time for religion and find it irrelevant.
Consumerism makes idols out of goods and replaces God.
Social factor of your choice (2).
Suffering terrorism ->
Driving people towards religion (encouraging people to learn more about religion).
Allowing religious groups to step in and give comfort and support to those suffering.
9/11 -> Changed the views of many American people - especially with the families who were saying their last goodbyes to the people involved in the crash via the phone.
Australia’s religious profile
The 61% of Christian’s in Australia has decreased
7% other Religion has increased
22% No religion has increased
People attending religious schools has increased, however, it doesn’t necessarily mean they’re religious or against it.
As we’ve become more diverse - there’s many more religions, so people can be interested to join.
Three different ways religion is viewed in society (3).
Belief system - meeting spiritual needs, giving purpose and meaning.
Regulator - manipulate people, regulate behaviour, give comfort, helping communities.
Viewed as something for someone else - they don’t think it’s “bad” - just don’t feel influenced by it (private, personal reasons).
Social factor (3)
Hardship - illness.
Having a sick member in your family - makes people turn to religion in order to pray for their safety and wellbeing.
When the person eventually becomes better, they will thank god and become more spiritual in that sense that he helped.
