Topic 3 - Asylum Seekers Flashcards
Nature of one current issue = Asylum seekers.
- Religion responds to the issue of the unacceptance towards asylum seekers (putting them in Mandatory detention) because they believe that Christ was very accepting towards others and so should we. They avoid aggressive protest and try get their message across through silent protest (e.g. walking quietly down the streets).
- They strictly believe in biblical teachings John 13:34 “love one another”, Matthew 25:31-46 states it means we are to help those less fortunate, and if we do – it’s the same as helping the Lord.
- They also try to create advocacy groups in order to get the general community involved Love makes a way, #LETTHEMSTAY and #ROOMATMYPLACE.
For and against arguments (saving asylum seekers)?
FOR - inhumane, not all asylum seekers/refugees are criminals, families separated, costs money to have them in off shore detention centres (Nauru, PNG).
AGAINST - reduces costs - for taxpayers, deterrent - punishment to stop people smugglers, not Australia’s responsibility to house these refugees in off-shore detentions, what they’re doing can be illegal.
