Topic 5 - Homeostasis and response Flashcards
what is homeostasis
Keeps internal conditions constant to external changes
what can humans control with homeostasis
1) water balance
2) body temperature
3) blood glucose
what receptors do
cells that detect internal or external changes
what does the coordination centre do
receive and process information received and send out signals and coordinate bodies response
what does the effector do
Muscle or gland bring response to the stimuli that has been received
central nervous system
consists of spinal cord and brain. In mammals it is connected to sensory and motor neurones
sensory neurone
The neurones that carry information as electrical impulses from the receptors to the CNS
Motor neurones
The neurons that carry electrical impulses from the CNS to the effector
effector
All your muscles and glands respond to nerve impulses
what does the synapse do
connects neurones and releases chemicals that set a new electrical impulse to the next neurone
how does reflex prevents injury
its rapid and automatic response to a stimuli
order of the reflex arc
stimulus
sensory neurone
relay neurone
synapse
motor neurone
effector
example of involuntary actions
shivering, breathing
example of voluntary actions
blinking, talking
