Topic 5:Health, Disease And The Development Of Medicines Flashcards
What is health
State of complete physical mental and social well being and not merely absence of disease
Difference between communicable and non communicable diseases
Communicable wich can be transfered from one person to another or one organism to another while non communicable are not transfered between to people or other organism
Why can the presence of one disease can lead to a higher susceptibility to other diseases
Diseases can weaken or damage the immune system or the body natural defence/barriers wich can cause an person vulnerable to catch other diseases
What are pathogens(2)
Microorganisms that cause diseases wich may be viruses bacteria protest or fungi
Whar is cholera
Bacteria wich causes diarrhoea
What is tuberculosis
Bacteria causes lung damage
What is Cholera ash dieback
Fungi wich cause leaf loss and bark lesions
What is malaria
Protests wich cause damage to blood and liver
What is HIV
Virus that destroys white blood cells leading to one set of AIDS
How are pathogens spread
Cholera , tuberculosis, cholera ash dieback, malaria
Cholera: water
Tuberculosis: airborne
Chalara ash dieback: airborne
Malaria: animal vector
What are 2 type of sexuallg transmitted infection (STIs)
Chlamydia(bacteria)
HIV(virus)
Wear protection like condoms
What are example of chemical and physical barrier
Physical barrier: mucus cilia and skin
Chemical defence: lysozyme and hydrochloric acid
What is the role of the immune system
Destroy pathogens in the body
What are antigens
Tells your immune system is something in your body is harmful or not
What are antibodies
Proteins produces by a type of white blood called lymphocytes, antibodies bine to the antigens and remove them from your body
What are lymphocytes(3)
White blood cells wich produce antibodies that responds to a specific antigen and memory cells remain in blood stream and lead to a quicker and stronger defence against secondary infection by the same pathogen
What are the body’s response to immunisation using an inactive form of a pathogen
Activate and imune response and antibody production wich means memory cells are made
Why can’t antibodies work on viruses
Antibodies only work on bacterial infections beacuse the inhibit cell processes in the bacterium but not the host organism
What are the stages of new medicine
Discovery, development, preclinical and clinical testing
What are factors of non communicable disease what causes them
Cardiovascular disease , cancer , lung and live disease and diseases influenced by nutrition
Whar are the most common cardiovascular disease
Coronary heart disease
