Topic 5: Energy Flashcards
What are the forms of energy?
chemicals, electrical, electromagnetic, nuclear, mechanical, and thermal
Potential energy
stored energy
Kinetic energy
energy of motion
What does the Law of Conservation of Energy state?
energy cannot be lost or destroyed, only changed from one form to another
Heat
the transfer of energy (often thermal energy) from a body of higher temp. to a body of lower temp.
Temperature
a measure of average kinetic energy
NOT heat and NOT a form of energy
Fusion
melting SOLID to LIQUID
Solidification
freezing LIQUID to SOLID
vaporization
boiling, evaporation LIQUID to GAS
exothermic processes…
give OFF heat energy, raising the temp. of the environment
endothermic processes…
ABSORB heat energy, lowering temp. of environment
Condensation
GAS to LIQUID
water vapor changing to liquid water
Sublimation
SOLID to a GAS without changing first to liquid phase
Deposition
water vapor changes directly to ice, GAS to SOLID, without changing first to liquid phase
