Topic 5- Energetics And Enthalpy Flashcards
1
Q
Define “Enthalpy”
A
Enthalpy is the heat content that is stored in a chemical system.
2
Q
What is the difference between heat and temperature?
A
- Temperature is the term used to describe the state of a system and determines the direction in which energy flows as heat.
- Heat is energy in transit as a result of a temperature difference.
3
Q
Define an exothermic reaction
A
Giving heat energy to the surroundings so there is a rise in temperature
4
Q
What happens to the internal energy of the system in an exothermic reaction?
A
The internal energy in the system decreases so delta H is negative.
5
Q
Define an endothermic reaction
A
Heat energy is taken in from the surroundings so there is a rise in temperature.
6
Q
Describe what happens to the internal energy systems during an endothermic reaction?
A
The internal energy system increases so delta H is positive.
