Topic 5: Chemical Compounds Flashcards
1
Q
What is the difference between compounds and molecules?
A
- Compounds are any two or more DIFFERENT elements bound together
- Molecules are any two or more elements bonded together, SAME or DIFFERENT
2
Q
What is a diatomic molecule?
A
Two of the same atom bonded together
3
Q
What three things do chemical formulas tell you?
A
- Letters tell us what elements are in the compound
- Subscript numbers tell us how many of each element
- Subscript letters tell us what state they are in
4
Q
What are the two types of chemical bonds? Describe them.
A
- Ionic bonds (Electrons are shared between a metal and a non-metal)
- Molecular bonds (Electrons are shared between two non-metals)
5
Q
What is the IUPAC?
A
International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry
6
Q
What is another term for molecular bonds?
A
Covalent bonds
7
Q
How to name a molecular compound?
A
- Write the name of the first non-metal element
- Change the ending of the second element to “ide”
- Use a latin prefix to indicate how many atoms of each element are present
