Topic 1: Exploring matter Flashcards
What is matter?
Anything that has mass and occupies space
What is the particle model of matter? (5 points)
- Matter is made up of extremely small particles
- There are always spaces between particles
- Particles are attracted to each other
- Particles are always moving
- Particles move faster and farther apart when they gain energy
What causes matter to change states?
Added energy (Usually thermal energy)
What is called when a gas becomes a liquid?
Condensation
What is called when a gas becomes a solid?
Deposition
What is called when a solid becomes a liquid?
Melting
What is called when a solid becomes a gas?
Sublimation
What is called when a liquid becomes a gas?
Evaporation
What is called when a liquid becomes a solid?
Freezing
What is it called when a substance releases energy?
Exothermic
What is it called when a substance absorbs energy?
Endothermic
What is a mixture?
Contains two different kinds of particles/substances
What is a pure substance?
Contains only one kind of particle/substance
What are the two main types of mixtures?
Homogeneous
Heterogeneous
What are the three types of heterogeneous mixtures?
- Suspension
- Colloid
- Emulsion
