Topic 4: Waves Flashcards
Define amplitude.
The maximum displacement of a wave from its rest position.
What is the frequency of a wave?
The number of wave cycles per second, measured in Hertz (Hz).
Define wavelength.
The distance between two consecutive crests or troughs of a wave.
What is the formula for wave speed?
Wave speed = Frequency × Wavelength (v = fλ).
What type of wave is sound?
Longitudinal.
What is a transverse wave?
A wave where oscillations are perpendicular to the direction of energy transfer.
Give an example of a transverse wave.
Light or water waves.
What happens when a wave is reflected?
It bounces back from a surface.
What happens during refraction?
A wave changes speed and direction when it passes into a different medium.
What is diffraction?
The spreading out of waves as they pass through a gap or around obstacles.
