Topic 10: Magnetism and Electromagnetism Flashcards
What is a magnetic field?
A region where magnetic forces can be detected.
What are the two poles of a magnet?
North pole and South pole.
What is an electromagnet?
A magnet created by electric current flowing through a coil of wire.
How can you increase the strength of an electromagnet?
Increase the current, use more coils, or add an iron core.
What happens when two like poles of magnets are brought close together?
They repel.
What is electromagnetic induction?
The process of inducing a voltage by moving a conductor through a magnetic field.
What device is used to increase or decrease voltage in a circuit?
Transformer.
What is the role of the motor effect in electric motors?
It causes a wire carrying current in a magnetic field to experience a force.
What is a solenoid?
A coil of wire that produces a magnetic field when current flows through it.
What is the right-hand rule in electromagnetism?
It determines the direction of the magnetic field around a current-carrying wire.
