Topic 4 Strong acid and weak acids Flashcards
What do acids do in water
They ionised an aqueous solution and produce hydrogen ions (H +)
What is H+ ion
It’s just a proton
What happens to strong acids in water
Ionise completely
fully dissociate to release H + ions
What happens to weak acids in water
Don’t fully ionise
Only small proportion of acid particles dissociate to release H+ ions
which acids strong or weak are reversible when ionised
Weak acids are reversible which sets up an equilibrium between the undissociated and dissociated acid
Although the equilibrium lies to the left
Why are strong acid is more reactive than weak acid
If the concentration of H + ions is high at the rate of reaction will be faster
What is pH a measure of
Concentration of hydrogen ions
For everyone decrease on the pH scale the concentration of hydrogen ions increases by
10
What does acid strength to tell you
What proportion of acid molecules ionise in water
What does concentration measure
How much acid there is in a certain volume of water
