Topic 1 Group 7 Elements Flashcards
What are group 7 known as
Halogens
What are all halogens
Nonmetals with coloured vapours
halogens
Fluorine
Chlorine
Bromine
Iodine
What do halogens naturally exist in
Pairs of atoms
Colours of the halogens
Florine = yellow gas (reactive abs poisonous)
Chlorine = dense green gas ( fairly reactive and poisonous)
Bromine = red brown volatile liquid (dense poisonous )
Iodine = dark grey crystalline solid or purple vapour
Trends of the halogens
As you go down :
Less reactive - harder to gain electrons because the outer shell is further away from the nucleus
Higher mp and bp
Have higher relative atomic masses
How do all halogens react
In similar ways because they all have 7 electrons on the out shell
How do halogens form molecular compounds
Halogen atoms can share electrons via covalent bonds with other non metals to get a full outer shell
What do all halogens form when reacting with another non metal
Simple molecular structures
How do halogens form ionic bonds
When ionically bonded to metals
What ions do halogens form
Halides
1- ions
E.g F- Cl- Br- I-
What do more reactive halogens displace
Less reactive ones
