Topic 4 - Properties and changes Flashcards
1
Q
What are the physical properties?
A
Characteristics observed or measured without changing the identity of a substance
2
Q
examples of physical properties
A
boiling point, color, temperature, luster, hardness, volume, mass, size, weight, length
3
Q
Physical properties include
A
- characteristics
- states of matter
- melting point
- conductivity
- malleability (make sheets), ductility (energy pass thru)
- Density (mass/volume), hardness (no scratching, breaking)
- viscosity
4
Q
What is a Physical change?
A
- Occurs when there is no change in the identity or composition of the substance
- When there is no chemical reaction
- Change in the state of matter are physical changes
- A change in the size, appearance, volume, etc. is a physical change
5
Q
What is a chemical property
A
- Characteristics that describe the ability of a substance
- The change into a new substance
- They interact with other substances
6
Q
examples of chemical properties
A
- toxicity
- oxidation
- chemical stability
- flammability
- Reactivity
7
Q
What is a chemical change?
A
Is a new substance formed with:
- New composition
- New physical/chemical properties
- Chemical reactions occur
- Original substances are transformed
- Most of the time they cant be turned back
8
Q
Evidences of a chemical change:
A
- spontaneous color change, production of heat/gases, or solids
