Topic 3 - States of Matter Flashcards
1
Q
Which are the 5 states of matter?
A
BE condensate, solid, liquid, gas and plasma
2
Q
Solid:
A
- Definite volume and shape
- Temperature is “low”
- Particles only vibrate in their place
- Particles are arranged, fixed and close
- Particles are strongly attracted
- They have big density, rigidity and hardness
- May be hard or soft
3
Q
Liquid:
A
- Temperature is medium
- particles move freely around, confined to the volumes
- Particles are arranged in random positions, close to each others
- attraction force is medium
- Fluids have fluidity and viscosity
4
Q
Gas:
A
- Temperature is high
- Particles move fast and freely, occupying all the space
- Particles are in random positions
- attraction forces are weak
- Gases can compress and expand depending on the pressure
5
Q
Plasma:
A
- No define shape or volume
- Very high temperature
- Particles move very fast
- Attraction forces are very weak
- Ionic dissociation
- Is a good conductor
- Reacts to magnets
6
Q
BE condensate:
A
- Very low temperature
- Null movement of particles
- Particles condensate and overlap each other
- Behave as waves
- Never observed in nature only in laboratory
- Ex. superfluids, superconductors
7
Q
What are the changes of state?
A
Phase transitions of the states due to temperature changes
8
