topic 4 - groups in the periodic table Flashcards
where are metals found in the periodic table?
left and middle.
what is the block in the middle of the periodic table called?
the transition metals: titanium, iron and nickel.
what makes metals good for making electrical wires?
high melting point and good conductor.
metals are malleable, what does that mean?
they can be bent or hammered into different shapes.
what are transition metals responsible for?
hair dyes and pottery glazes.
what do metallic bonds give metals? and why?
a giant structure consisting of pos. ions and free electrons.
this is because metallic bonds allow the outer electrons of each atom to become delocalised.
what do metallic bonds create?
a ‘sea of electrons’ (delocalised electrons) throughout the metal, which is what gives rise to many of the properties of metals.
what does a high melting point mean?
strong metallic bonds that require a large amount of energy to break, so an increase in temperature is needed.
what can halogens do?
easily obtain a full outer shell by gathering one electron.
gain an electron in reactions to form neg. ions with a -1 charge.
have similar chemical properties.
all halogen atoms require one more electron to obtain a full outer and become stable. how does each atom achieve this?
by sharing one electron with another atom to form a single covalent bond.
what are all halogens?
non-metals: cannot conduct electricity.
brittle and crumbly when solid.
poisonous and smelly.
