topic 1 - atomic structure and the periodic table. Flashcards
what is the relative mass and charge of protons, neutrons and electrons?
proton 1, 1
neutron 1, 0
electron 1/1840, -1
what are the properties of protons?
heavy, pos. charged.
what are the properties of neutrons?
heavy, neutral (no charge).
what are the properties of electrons?
tiny, neg. charged.
what did Mendelev do?
organised elements available to him in order of increasing atomic weight, and looked to see if there were any patterns.
he made progress by leaving gaps that he thought elements should go in however they weren’t discovered yet.
when they were discovered, their properties were close to what he predicted.
describe the atomic structure?
at the centre of each atom is the nucleus and it contains protons and neutrons.
the nucleus has a pos. charge.
electrons are arranged in shells around the nucleus.
each atom has the same number of protons.
atoms are electrically neutral overall electrons.
the nucleus of an atom is very much smaller than the atom.
how do you calculate the RAM of a mixture of isotopes?
x the % of each isotope by its atomic mass and + them together.
what are isotopes?
different atomic forms of the same element, which have the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons.
