Topic 4 - Eukryotes Flashcards
What is the morphology of typical eukaryotes?
Membrane-bound nucleus, larger than bacteria and archaea, organelles & cell wall
What are characteristics of eukaryotic nucleus?
Double membrane structure, contains near chromosomes, non-membrane bound nucleadus exists within, storage and expression of information
What does the mitonchondríado?
Power house of the cell, cell metabolism and produce ATP
What is the role of chloroplasts in the cell?
Cell metabolism, electron transport to produce ATP, uses ATP to fix carbon
What does the mitochondria and chloroplast have in common?
Both are semi autonomous, can replicate independently of cell
What is the role of the cell wall?
Cell support, with a surface of peptidoglycan
What is the role of cytoskeleton
Cell structure
What are the three parts of the cytoskeleton?
Microtubules, microfilaments, intermediate filaments
What else is the cytoskeleton involved in?
Tricellular trafficking, Motion, cell division assisted by fibers
When does the motion occur?
When ATP is burned
What are the 4 phyla of eukaryotic microorganisms?
Fungi, Protozoa, slime molds, algae
What are some charederistics of fungi?
Heterotrophic, cell walls of chitin, easy to study
What are some characteristics of Protozoa?
Some hetoro, some photosynthetic, variability in cell walls mobility and reproduction
What are charecterstis of slime moulds?
Model for studying ecology, mobility, communication
What are characteristic of algae?
Many are multicellulaire
