Topic 3 - Archaea Flashcards
What are some distinctive properties of archaea?
Look like bacteria but are not, live inhospitable places, no archaeal human pathogens
Where did archaea originate?
From eukaryotes!
What were the first Archaea?
Methanogens
What were archaea size and shapes?
0.5-5 micrometers, rods, cocci, spiral, irregular, square
What do archaea cytoplasm contain?
No membrane-bound nuclear, single circular chromosomes, histones that wrap around DNA
What does the cell envelope contain?
Most have cell wall but no outer membrane.
How many layers is the plasma membrane?
Usually bilager, high temperatures see monolayers
What does the slayer do?
Protect against viruses and help stick
What are the 4 major phyla?
Enryarchaeota, crenarchaeota, theumarchaeota, nanoarchaeota,
What are common in the phyla euryarchaeota?
Halophiles in high salt environments
What is common in the phyla crenarchaeote?
Thermopiles, hyperthermophiles, acidophiles, barophiles
