Topic 4 - Chemical Changes Flashcards
What is pH scale numbers
0-6 acids
7 neutral
8-14 alkalis
what do acids produce in water
they produce protons in water
what is the pH a measure of
it is the measure of the concentration of hydrogen ions
what happens if a strong acid reacts with water
the acid ionises completely in water, all the acid particles dissociate to release H+ ions.
what happens if a weak acid reacts with water
the acid doesn’t fully ionise in the solution, only a small proportion of acid particles dissociates to release H+ ions.
what is a redox reaction
it is if electrons is transferred
what is it called when an electron is lost of an oxygen
it is called oxidation
what is it called when an electron is gained of an oxygen
it is called reduction
what happens at the same time in oxygen
REDuction and OXidation happen at the same time, that’s why its called REDOX
what is a displacement reaction
it involves one metal kicking another one out of a compound
what is the rule of displacement reaction
a more reactive metal will displace a less reactive metal from its compound
zebra ting for reactive series
please stop calling me a careless zebra instead, try learning how copper save gold
