The 1944 Education act (Butler act )
Established 3 types of secondary schools. Based on the assumption that different types of pupils were better suited to different types of education , the differences were based on what was seen as an inbuilt ability which was measurable at the age of 11 using IQ tests (11+) questions were to measure the abstract abilities of pupils
Grammar schools- for those who had passed the 11+ (20% of students ) consisted of mainly academic teaching including classics.Mainly middle class
Secondary modern schools- for those who failed the 11+ around 75% , less academic , emphasis on vocational subjects preparing to jobs in a factory
Technical schools - students with technical ability (about 5%) emphasising technical and vocational skills . Variety of backgrounds, backgrounds , particularly working class . More boys than girls
