What are the four basic layers of staff in a business hierarchy
Directors - responsible for business strategy
Managers - organise the carrying out of directors strategy
Supervisors - oversee specific projects and teams
Operatives - the workers who carry out specific tasks
What is a chain of command
a ladder of authority where those in charge of an organization or company direct and control employees below them
Span of control
The number of workers who report to one manager in a hierarchy
Tall organisation structure
Long chain of command with more layers of management. Each manager has a narrow span of control.
Flat organisation structure
There is a short chain of command. Each manager has a wide span of control.
Centralised organisation
All major decisions are made by one person or a few managers at the top of the hierarchy
Decentralised organisation
The authority to make most decisions are shared out . Power could be delegated to regional manager or employees.
What three ways can a business be organised by
Region, function, product
How long do full time employees often work
35-40 hours a week
How long do part time employees often work
Less than a full working week, between 10 and 30 hours per week.
Zero hour contract
A company can call this person into work when needed, the employee does not have to accept.
Internal recruitment
Recruiting current employees into a new role
External recruitment
Involves recruiting someone from outside the business.
Induction training
Introducing the new employee to their workplace
On the job training
The employee learns to do their job better by being shown how to do it, and then practising.
Off the job training
When staff learn away from their workplace e.g, college.
Ways of financial motivation
Salary
Commission (paid to sales staff for every item they sell)
Profit sharing (percentage of company profits is divided between employees.

Fringe benefits
Any reward that is not part of a workers main income, as a perk of working at that company. Such as a company car or free health insurance.
