A

Prejudice - judging someone before knowing them
Discrimination - leaving someone out or making them feel different because of something about them
Stereotyping - thinking people act a certain way because of who/ what they are

  • Some people were brought up to think about someone/ a group of people in a certain way
  • fear : an experience with someone from a certain group could make you think that everyone in that group is like that
  • religion : a religion could paint someone/ a group of people in a bad way

  • Offers a powerful way to reduce poverty through everyday shopping
  • Based on a partnership between producers of goods and those who buy them
  • Eliminating the middle man

What is the role of women in the church?

A

Women can only be nuns of religious sisters, only men can be priests. In 2015 Pope Francis forcefully shut down the idea of women being priests.

How does FairTrade work?

A
  • Coffee for example.
  • Coffee beans are expensive but the farmers who produce them aren’t paid as much for their coffee beans as there is a middle man who bargains the price and sells it for more
  • Fair-trade works to eliminate the middle man completely to ensure everyone gets paid a fair price for their supplies and work

What is the summary on discrimination against disabled people?

  • there are 50 million disabled people in Europe.
  • people with disabilities have the same rights as others, but some aren’t treated equally
  • The Equality Act 2010 made it unlawful to discriminate against someone because of their physical and/or mental disability.
  • the sister of John f Kennedy, Eunice Kennedy shriver founded the special Olympics in December of 1968

What can we do to support fairtrade?

A
  • Individual = sign up to online campaigns that ask for your help to fight social injustice. Donate money to charities or buying fairtrade products or even taking time to pray for those in a crises
  • Community = organise fundraising events to help raid awareness of injustices.

What is the biblical teaching on prejudice and discrimination?

A
  • the Old Testament teaches that humankind is created in the image of god and all humans share a spiritual likeness to god. Genesis 1:27 “so god created man beings, making them to be like himself”
  • Jesus based his teachings about other people on love “love your neighbor as you love yourself”
    -everyone is equal in the eyes of god and so it’s wrong to make anyone suffer or feel inferior because of differences between them “there’s no difference between Jews and gentiles, slaves and free people, between men and women, you’re all in union with Christ Jesus”

  • Absolute = Severe deprivation of human needs such as food, water, sanitation, health
  • Relative = Measured by the level of income a family have

What is the church teaching on prejudice and discrimination? (4 points)
- Catholic Church : strongly condemns discrimination against all people, especially because of their colour, race, religion and condition in life. Men and women can’t be fully human without one another - Presbyterian church : “become more socially inclusive, try and have more people of different cultures in your home” , “no one likes to admit to treating disabled people as less, but the way we behave can give them this message - church of Ireland : “if we don’t challenge racism and discrimination then how can we convince others that we believe in Christ and the kingdom be created”. The church of Ireland working group on disability was established in 2005 and their aim is to promote the awareness of disabled people - Methodist church : they promote the idea of refugees coming to Ireland and the people of Ireland and the government should be more accepting
